Policing Survey

On 14 July, I sent out an e-mail about the Leicestershire Constabulary Policing Priorities Survey, with the survey form attached. Many thanks to the NHW members who have responded to the Survey; I know the police have been very pleased to receive your views.

However, it has been pointed out to me that the majority of the residents who have responded are age 50 or above. It would be particularly helpful to the police to have the views on policing priorities of all age groups, so if you haven't responded yet, why not print off the attached survey form, complete it and put it through the letter box of the Police Station at Queen Street, Bottesford. Alternatively, hand it to your local NHW Coordinator who will ensure it reaches the Police. If you can't remember the name & telephone number of your NHW Coordinator, just ask me.

Many thanks for your cooperation.

Telephone Cold Calling

The following alert was received from Lincs Police last night.

Watchline message on Tuesday, 21 July 2009 from Lincolnshire Police Headquarters, Community Safety Unit reference Cold Callers.

There have been incidents over the past 2 weeks where the elderly have been receiving cold caller telephone calls from people claiming to be representatives of their banks. Some have claimed there is too much money in the bank and they are offering to manage their accounts for them. Others have asked for the elderly to confirm their bank account details for security reasons.
Western Union Bank transfers have been used emptying bank accounts.
Some elderly people have received calls from a male offering to pay a large amount of money into their account and they are to keep 20% of the money (for their help)and send the rest to other bank accounts.

Police Advice is Do Not give bank details to persons over the phone or at the door. Please be aware this is happening on a daily basis. Reports have been received of the same person calling every day for over a week and making threats.

If you have any information relating to this type of Cold Caller incident, contact Leicestershire Constabulary on 0116 222 2222 and NHW. Thank you.

Possible Scam

The following message has been received this afternoon from Lincs Constabulary. Please be vigilant for any possible scam and report anything suspicious to the Police and NHW.

Good afternoon, this is a message from Julia Higgins at Colsterworth to alert you to a call that was received today by a lady in Colsterworth. She received a call from a male who asked if she banked with TSB, which she did, he then went on to tell her that he could help her to claim back bank charges. He said she would receive a pack in the post, but asked her to give him the expiry date of her card. She refused to do so and asked for more information and told him she would make some enquiries herself and he could call her back later. It would appear that this may be a scam, however even if it is genuine, please ensure that all your residents are aware and DO NOT give out any bank details or expiry dates etc over the phone in order to prevent crime. Thank you.
