Con-Man?

Two incidents of locals falling for a 'sob' story have been passed to me today.

1    A report has reached Bottesford NHW of an 'Italian-sounding' male who suddenly pulled up outside the home of a resident couple and asked the way to London: he said that he was lost.  He then said that he was short of money and would they like to buy 3 coats from him.   The residents invited him into their home and parted with good money for the coats!

2    The second case is of a gentleman who was also approached by an 'Italian-sounding' male saying he was nearly out of petrol and had no money.   The gentleman then drove with him to the filling station and put in £30.00 of petrol.   The 'Italian-sounding' male then said he had no cigarettes so the gentleman purchased some for him.

Please be aware of the presence in the Neighbourhood of people who will very willingly take advantage of gullible locals.  Please warn all vulnerable friends and neighbours, and report all suspicious people and incidents to the police on 0116 222 2222 asap.

If you need help to contact the police, please call me on one of the numbers below.

Strangers/Cold Callers

Reported 1st August in Harby:

Approx 5pm - 5.15 pm today, 3 tidily dressed (shirts, ties, trousers) male  teenagers targeted two of the senior citizens bungalows in Watsons Lane, Harby

The persons called at one property but the next door neighbour asked them what they wanted. They said they were looking for their Gran.
They then left and got into a red 4 door saloon car parked in School Lane end and drove away.
No make/model or registration number of the vehicle were able to be noted or in which direction they drove away.

Another resident also had them knock at their door where they asked to go in to the house to check the water. The resident refused.

Beware of cold callers, even one alone may be part of a distraction burglary team!

Please be vigilant especially if you have elderly neighbours who may be living alone.
Pass information to those who you know do not receive email alerts.  Please report all suspicious person and incidents to the police as soon as possible.

Burglary and Fraud

n the BOTTESFORD Area
There has been a Burglary to an out building in the Orston Lane Area and a quantity of Jewellery was stolen between the hours of 5 pm Sunday (29 July) and noon on Monday (30/7).

During the Car Boot Market sale on Sunday a fraud was committed, when a person purchased what they thought to be 3 laptops,  when the package was opened,  it turned out to be 3 water bottles.  Please make sure that you examine your purchases before leaving the stall.

Finally, thanks to kind Bottesford lady who found Sparky the parrot and reunited him with his owner a few weeks ago.

Sandbags to Be collected

I have now been informed by Melton B C that Verdant will commence the sandbag collection on Wednesday 1 August, starting at about 9 am.

Residents are reminded that:

1    Households are free to keep any sandbags they have acquired over the last 2 or 3 weeks.  However, the plastic 'sacking' used, whether white or green, will deteriorate relatively quickly when exposed to light.  Therefore unless you have a dry and dark storage facility, it isn't wise to try to store them for a long period.

2    The collection will be undertaken by Verdant (the company that delivered the bags to the Parish) on a street-by-street basis, in a manner similar to the refuse and recycling collections.  Residents will need to move the bags to the roadside edge of their property, but anyone who requires physical help to move them should contact the Parish Clerk (Mrs B Taylor) on 01949 843611 as soon as possible.

3    If you have any doubt about your bags being seen, eg if you have the only sandbags in your street, you are advised to call me with your details as soon as possible, so I can ensure Verdant are aware of your address.
