Police Update

Dear NHW members,

I felt it appropriate that after a very successful NHW year to express my thanks and support for all the information that you have passed to the Police. There is no doubt in my mind that the corridor of information that is now open between the community and the police has led to the prevention and detection of crime and a better understanding of what is occurring in our Neighbourhood.

I would like to give a few recent examples of what I see as good practice with regard to the passage of information and explain what it achieved.

Back in late October, 2008, there were a number of thefts of pedal cycles and portable items in Bottesford. Although not a serious or violent crime, it had the effect of undermining the community’s confidence in the security of their neighbourhood. It was only with the help of spirited community members, NHW and the email alert system that allowed us to identify a number of offenders arrest them and place them before the court. The important factors were the speed and the wide ranging distribution of the initial information. As a result of the email I was able to locate other victims who had important information that assisted in the investigation.

Following a recent burglary in the Vale of Belvoir the description of a distinctive vehicle was immediately circulated amongst over 700 NHW email alert members. A watch member living a number of miles away who saw the alert reported the sighting of an identical vehicle seen that day in suspicious circumstances. This member crucially had a registration number also!

One local group circulated a report within their community of a recent increase in the number of purse thefts. It appeared to that community that a common factor existed in each of the thefts which were circulated via email alerts and word of mouth. There is no doubt that the timely exchange of information prevented further crimes in the area and protected other vulnerable members of the community.

NHW is not just about reducing crime and disorder and making our community a safer place. It’s also about getting to know each other, and building a neighbourhood that is a better place to live, work and play.

Thank you for all the extra information and keep up the good work!
